Video calls, online classes and live streams all start with a clear picture. Here is what to look for when you pick a webcam.
1. Resolution
1080P (Full HD) is a sensible choice for most people. It gives a sharp picture for meetings and streaming without needing a powerful computer.
2. Autofocus
An autofocus webcam keeps you sharp if you lean in, move around or hold something up to the camera. Fixed focus models can be fine if you sit in the same place.
3. Built-in microphone
Many webcams include a microphone, which is handy for calls. If sound quality matters, for example for streaming, consider a separate microphone as well.
4. Plug and play
Look for a webcam that works without installing drivers. You plug it into a USB port and your computer recognises it.
5. Mounting and stand
Some webcams clip onto a monitor or laptop screen. A flexible clamp stand lets you position the camera at a better angle, ideally at eye level.
6. Lighting matters most
Even a great camera looks poor in a dark room. Face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with light behind you. Night vision or low-light features can help, but good lighting still gives the best result.
