How to Choose a Wireless Mouse: 6 Things to Check Before You Buy

A good mouse makes a long day at the desk feel easier. A bad one gives you a sore wrist and a lot of frustration. If you are shopping for a wireless mouse, these are the six things worth checking first.

1. Connection type

Most wireless mice connect in one of two ways. A 2.4G mouse uses a small USB receiver that plugs into your computer. It is usually plug and play and works on most desktops and laptops. A Bluetooth mouse pairs directly with your device, so it does not use up a USB port, which is handy for tablets and slim laptops. Check which your device supports before you buy.

2. Battery

Some mice use replaceable batteries, others charge over USB. Rechargeable models are convenient, but check whether the mouse can still be used while charging. Product pages should list the battery type.

3. Size and grip

A mouse should fit your hand. Larger hands usually prefer a bigger body, while slim, low-profile mice suit small hands and travel bags. If you use your mouse for hours, comfort matters more than looks.

4. Sensor and speed

Sensor speed is measured in DPI. Higher DPI means the cursor moves further for each movement of your hand. For office work, a standard setting is fine. For gaming, look for a mouse with adjustable DPI so you can find your own sweet spot.

5. Noise and buttons

If you work in a shared space or at night, look for a mouse described as quiet or silent click. Extra side buttons are useful for gaming and for shortcuts such as back and forward.

6. A proper surface

Even a great mouse works better on a good mouse mat. A larger desk mat gives you space for both your keyboard and mouse and protects your desk.
